Women's Swimming Holds On To Third Place At NEAC Meet

The Wells College women's swimming team remains in third place following the second of three days of competition at the North Eastern Athletic Conference championship meet, hosted by Cazenovia College.

On Saturday, Feb. 16, Wells advanced seven individual swimmers and two relays into the A finals of events and earned two individual all-conference finishes and a pair of all-conference finishes in the relays.

Wells ranks third in the team standings with 313 team points, trailing first-place Cazenovia by 96 points headed into Sunday's final day of the championship meet. Wells is 19 points behind second-place Cedar Crest.

Two relay events highlighted the meet for the Express. The 200-yard medley relay of Shannon Simmons, Callia Ortega, Courtney Cloutier, and Caitlin Lawrence swam to second place with a time of 2:09.46. The 800-yard freestyle relay of Lawrence, Simmons, Ortega, and Cloutier finished in third place with a time of 9:33.50. That time ranks eighth all-time at Wells College in the 800 free relay.

A pair of individuals swam to all-conference finishes. Courtney Cloutier was second in the 400-yard individual medley in 5:06.41. The first-place finisher in the event swam a record-setting time in the NEAC Championships. Callia Ortega was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:10.42.

Lawrence was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle finals in 2:26.44 and Amy Storti was sixth in the 200 free with a time of 2:39.34. Storti swam 2:32.52 in the prelims.

Bella George took fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:33.60. Simmons was fifth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:18.14, and Caroline Kelemen placed sixth in the finals of the 100-yard butterfly in 1:38.38.

The third day of competition takes place Sunday, Feb. 17 with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and event finals beginning at 4:45 p.m.
