WELLS WOMEN’S TENNIS TOPS COBLESKILL

Aurora, N.Y.–  The Wells College women's tennis team improved to 5-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play defeating the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers by a score of 7-2 on Saturday afternoon in Aurora, N.Y. The Express swept through doubles and took four of six matches in singles action to earn the victory. The Express improve to 5-3 overall (5-2 NEAC), while the Fighting Tigers fall to 4-5 (4-2 NEAC).

Cat Abrego (Berwyn, Ill./Mt. Spokane) and Sarah Hansen (Cortland Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) paced the Express at No. 1 doubles holding on to defeat the No. 1 duo of Abigail Badger (Cobleskill, N.Y./King's West) and Bridget Delcoure (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) 9-7. Ana Riley (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) and Paulo Goodnough (Mannsville, N.Y./S. Jefferson) ran through No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 victory, while Lorina and Mindy LaMier (Canastota, N.Y./Canastota) held on for a hard fought 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles to complete the doubles flight sweep for Wells.

Due to poor condition the match was moved inside and the singles format was changed to an eight game pro set.

Abrego set the tone for the Express at No. 1 singles defeating Badger 8-4, while Riley, Aya Shiraishi (Osaka, Japan), and Caitlyn Copfer (Clinton, N.Y./Clinton) all earned victories in singles action for the Express.

The only two victories for the Fighting Tigers came at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Delcoure earned the victory at No. 2 singles 8-3, while Emilie Snyder (Schoharie, N.Y./Schoharie) earned an 8-4 victory at No. 3 singles.  

The Express now await seeding for the upcoming NEAC tournament to be held the Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit, Pa. on April 22-23, while the Fighting Tigers close out their regular season NEAC schedule tomorrow against Keuka College at 10:00 a.m. in Keuka Park, N.Y.
