WOMEN'S TENNIS EARNS WEEKEND SPLIT

(Aurora, N.Y.)─ The Wells women's tennis team opened their spring 2011 season with a weekend split. The Express defeated defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) champion Penn. St. Harrisburg 8-1 on Saturday before falling to Wilson College 5-4 on Sunday. The Express overall record now stands at 1-4 (1-1 NEAC).
 
On Saturday, the Express swept the doubles round by scores of 8-3, 8-3, and 8-4 to take a commanding 3-0 team lead heading into singles play. Sarah Hansen took home the victory at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Lorina Lamier won at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-1 and sister Mindy Lamier won at No. 4 6-4, 6-0, while Kelly Pietruch and Brittany Vanno won out at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to seal the 8-1 victory.
 
On Sunday, the Express found themselves in hard fought battle with Wilson College. The Phoenix took both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to open up a 2-1 lead heading into singles action.
 
The Phoenix won at No. 1, 2, and 3 singles to earn the five points necessary for the win. Despite falling in the top three singles spots, the Express finished strong in the four through six slots. Miny Lamier won at No. 4 6-4, 6-0, Kelly Pietruch earned her fourth victory of the weekend at No. 5 with a 5-7, 6-4 (10-7) win, while Brittany Vanno matched her doubles teammate with her fourth victory over the weekend, a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles.
 
The Express return to action Saturday, April 9 against conference foe Penn. St. Abington at 11:00 am in Aurora.
