Express defeat the Charges to go undefeated in the NEAC

Aurora, NY (4/21/12) – The Wells College women's tennis team held strong to defeat Lancaster Bible 8-1 in a cold and rain soaked contest to remain undefeated and conclude regular season NEAC play.  With the victory, Wells improves to 8-4 on the season (6-0 in NEAC) while the Chargers fall to 2-10 on the season.

With the courts literally under-water and nothing but rain in the forecast, players were given the choice to try and begin the conditions or wait for a possible break in the mists of rain.  The ladies agreed to begin and soon adjusted to the elements where doubles play concluded with the Express taking a 2-1 lead.  At 2nd doubles,  Copfer and Vanno defeated Nachtigal and Scott 8-2, likewise at 3rd doubles, Shimazki and Pietruch earned an 8-2 victory over Buckwalter and Smith.  At 1st doubles,  Funk and Scott did well to earn the only win for the Charger 8-3 over Taguchi and Ellis.

With no breaks in the misty rain, singles action was reduced to pro-sets where Wells earned all six of six wins.  Shimazaki and Pietruch got things going at the 5th and 6th spots by posting 8-0 wins over Scott and Smith.  Taguchi battled past Funk to earn a 9-8 (7-4) win at 1st singles and at 2nd singles Ellis remains unbeaten in the NEAC by downing Scott 8-3.   The match concluded with Copfer and Vanno coming through at 3rd and 4th singles by scores of 8-1 and 8-3.

Wells next hosts SUNY Oswego (weather permitting) in Aurora,NY.  ( 4/24/12) at 4:00pm
