Takeuchi Extends Singles Streak In 6-3 Loss To Penn St.-Abington

AURORA, N.Y.Ayumi Takeuchi (Eniwa, Hokkaido, Japan) extended her unbeaten streak to four singles matches as the Wells College women's tennis team posted a 6-3 loss to the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Abington Sunday afternoon at the Wells College tennis courts. With the loss, the Express fall to 3-9 overall on the season and to 2-2 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Nittany Lions remain unbeaten within league play (4-0) and even their overall record at 8-8.

Takeuchi was able to power past Olga Popili at No. 3 singles via set scores of 6-3 and 6-2, bringing her season singles record to 4-0. Junior Brittany Vanno (Whitesboro, N.Y.) was able to defeat Lori Phillips in a decisive third set (4-6, 6-4, 6-5) at No. 2 singles while senior Kelly Pietruch (Whitesboro, N.Y.) set down Evgenia Nigay 7-5 (7-3), 6-4.

With the singles victory, Vanno has cracked the all-time top-10 list in singles play, gathering her 14th collegiate victory.
