Women’s Tennis Posts 6-3 Senior Day Victory Over Penn St.-Harrisburg

WOMEN'S TENNIS SENIOR DAY GAME PROGRAM

AURORA, N.Y. – Senior Kelly Pietruch (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and freshman Taryn Heath (Homer, N.Y.) were both undefeated in singles and doubles action as the Wells College women's tennis team posted a 6-3 victory over the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Harrisburg Saturday afternoon at the Wells College tennis courts. The victory lifts the Express to a 6-9 overall record and to 4-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The defeat drops the Nittany Lions to a 7-9 overall record and to a 4-3 mark in league play.

Pietruch defeated her No. 4 singles opponent, Amanda Herr, 6-1 and 6-3 after partnering with freshman Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) at No. 3 doubles for an 8-6 victory. Heath snuck past Emilie Jussaume 5-7, 6-3 and 6-3 at No. 5 singles before joining junior Brittany Vanno (Whitesboro, N.Y.) for an 8-3 defeat of Alejandra Portillo and Herr at No. 2 doubles.

Ayumi Takeuchi (Eniwa, Hokkaido, Japan) posted her seventh-straight victory at No. 3 singles, remaining undefeated (7-0) on the season. No player in Wells history has ever posted an unblemished singles record with more than five matches played – Catherine Babbitt '83 was 12-1 in 1981 while both Amber Garnett and Ana Lucia Riley '11 posted 9-1 marks to conclude their seasons.

In 2012-13, the tandem of Benedetto and Pietruch has accumulated a 4-2 overall record while Heath and Vanno have posted a 4-3 mark. Senior Caitlyn Copfer (Clinton, N.Y.) and Ayumi Takeuchi (Eniwa, Hokkaido, Japan) lead the team with a mark of 5-2 on the year.

For Penn St.-Harrisburg, Gabrielle LeGendre and Theodora Avramidis won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, before edging Copfer and Takeuchi at No. 1 doubles to account for Harrisburg's victories.

In a post-game ceremony, the three graduating senior student-athletes, Pietruch, Copfer and Emma Martin (Concord, N.H.), were honored by friends and family and recognized for their contributions to the women's tennis program at Wells College during their time at the school.

The Express return to action Sunday, Apr. 21 as they conclude their regular season against the Storm of Keuka College at 11:00 a.m. – the match was originally scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m., but was pushed back late Saturday afternoon.
