Women’s Tennis Defeats Keuka To Conclude Regular Season

AURORA, N.Y. – In their final regular season match before entering the North Eastern Athletic Conference playoffs, the Wells College women's tennis team powered past the Storm of Keuka College by a 7-2 margin Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Express conclude their season with a 7-9 overall record alongside a 5-2 mark in league play – the Express were 6-2 this spring. The Storm fall to 6-5 overall on the year and to 2-4 overall in league play.

Senior Caitlyn Copfer (Clinton, N.Y.) and Ayumi Takeuchi (Eniwa, Hokkaido, Japan) combined for the victory at No. 1 doubles while also defeating their singles opponents at No. 1 and No. 3, respectively. Junior Brittany Vanno (Whitesboro, N.Y.) was a winner at No. 2 singles over Sarah Schneider, 6-3 and 6-1, while senior Kelly Pietruch (Whitesboro, N.Y.) laid claim to a No. 4 singles victory over Danielle Delgatto.

The tandem of Vanno and freshman Taryn Heath (Homer, N.Y.) was victorious at No. 2 doubles over Schneider and Nikita Wilkins, while Pietruch and freshman Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.

Takeuchi posted her eighth-straight victory at No. 3 singles, remaining undefeated (8-0) on the season. No player in Wells history has ever posted an unblemished singles record with more than five matches played – Catherine Babbitt '83 was 12-1 in 1981 while both Amber Garnett and Ana Lucia Riley '11 posted 9-1 marks to conclude their seasons.

The Express have qualified for the NEAC postseason by finishing in the top 50% of teams in the conference – as a team, they will travel to the Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit, Pa. to partake in the 2012-13 NEAC Women's Tennis Championship on Apr. 27. More information regarding the postseason for the Wells College women's tennis team will be posted as it becomes available.
