Takeuchi Earns NEAC Student-Athlete Of The Week Honors

GANSEVOORT, N.Y.Ayumi Takeuchi (Eniwa, Hokkaido, Japan) was selected as the North Eastern Athletic Conference West Division Women's Tennis Student-Athlete of the Week after her performance this past week for the Wells College women's tennis team, the conference office announced Monday. As a team, the Express are heading back to the conference playoffs for the second consecutive season following a 4-0 week.

Takeuchi posted four singles victories in four straight days this past week at No. 3 singles against Oswego St., Cazenovia, Penn St.-Harrisburg and Keuka while dropping only one match, a No. 1 doubles tilt against the Nittany Lions on Saturday. In 2012-13, Takeuchi has only posted two defeats on the year – both at No. 1 doubles. She remains undefeated in singles play (8-0) on the season.

She posted her eighth-straight victory at No. 3 singles this past Sunday against Keuka, remaining undefeated (8-0) on the season. No player in Wells history has ever posted an unblemished singles record with more than five matches played – Catherine Babbitt '83 was 12-1 in 1981 while both Amber Garnett (2001) and Ana Lucia Riley '11 (2010) posted 9-1 marks to conclude their seasons.

The Express have qualified for the NEAC postseason by finishing in the top 50% of teams in the conference – as a team, they will travel to the Birchwood Tennis Club in Clarks Summit, Pa. to partake in the 2012-13 NEAC Women's Tennis Championship on Apr. 27. More information regarding the postseason for the Wells College women's tennis team will be posted as it becomes available.
