Women's Tennis Secures 8-1 Victory Over Lancaster Bible

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College women's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College on Saturday. The Express have won three straight matches to improve to 3-6 overall on the year while remaining undefeated within the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Lancaster Bible falls to 2-5 on the season, remaining winless on the year in league play (0-3).

The Express swept their doubles counterparts from Lancaster Bible to begin the day with a 3-0 head start leading into singles play. The tandem of senior Brittany Vanno (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and sophomore Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) opened the afternoon with an 8-4 victory while sophomore Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) and classmate Miku Kugo (Toyota, Aichi, Japan) edged their opponents by the same margin. Sophomore Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) and Mizuki Furuta (Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan) dispatched the No. 3 doubles duo by an 8-2 score.

Vanno defeated the Chargers' Anna Stefano at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-3, 6-4 to pick up her 21st career singles victory. Kugo defeated Kacie Scott in back-to-back 6-1 sets at No. 2 singles while Benedetto set down Brianne Smith at No. 4 singles by a 6-1, 6-0 margin. Hunt picked up the 8-3 win at No. 5 singles and Furuta defeated Stephanie Blest by an 8-4 score.

The most intense battle of the day came at No. 3 singles as Heath and Julia Dariychuk battled to a third set. Dariychuk posted a 6-4 win before Heath countered with a 6-1 victory of her own. Both players went back-and-forth in the third set, but Dariychuk held on for the thrilling 10-6 three set victory.

Wells returns to action this Sunday, Apr. 13 as they host the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Berks in a high noon match-up. In the NEAC West Divisional Tournament Finals in 2013, the Nittany Lions were able to set down Wells by a 5-2 margin to claim their second-straight league title.
