Women's Tennis Knocks Off Reigning NEAC Champs, 5-4

AURORA, N.Y. – After falling to the Nittany Lions in the NEAC West Division Championship match last season, the Wells College women's tennis team rebounded to post a 5-4 victory over Penn St.-Berks on Sunday. With the win, Wells remains undefeated (3-0) in North Eastern Athletic Conference play while improving to 4-6 overall on the season. Penn St.-Berks drops to 2-12 overall and to 1-3 within the league.

The Express and Nittany Lions each took three victories in singles play but Wells was able to secure the big win by taking two out of three doubles matches. Sophomore Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) and classmate Miku Kugo (Toyota, Aichi, Japan) were able to set down their opponents at No. 2 doubles by an 8-6 margin before sophomore Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) and Mizuki Furuta (Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan) won by an 8-1 score at No. 3 doubles.

Sophomore Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) set down Erin Ginther at No. 3 singles, taking the decision via 6-2 and 6-0 set scores. Benedetto remained undefeated on the afternoon, capturing a big win at No. 4 singles while Furuta set down Ivana Davis 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Kugo nearly edged her No. 2 singles opponent, Nandita Munindra, but fell by set scores of 3-6, 7-5 and 10-5.

Senior Brittany Vanno (Whitesboro, N.Y.) was honored for her contributions to the program following this afternoon's match. Classmate Giavarna Faison (Brooklyn, N.Y.) will be recognized for her participation with the women's tennis team prior to the next home match.

Wells returns to action this Wednesday, Apr. 16 as they host the Storm of Keuka College in a key NEAC match-up beginning at 4:00 p.m.
