Women’s Tennis Wins Sixth Straight Match, Blanking St. Elizabeth 9-0

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The Wells College women's tennis team secured a 9-0 victory over the Screaming Eagles from the College of Saint Elizabeth Friday afternoon. With the victory, Wells has won six straight matches while remaining perfect in North Eastern Athletic Conference play (6-6, 5-0 NEAC). The Screaming Eagles fall to 1-9 overall and to 1-5 within the league.

Wells swept through doubles play as senior Brittany Vanno (Whitesboro, N.Y.) and teammate Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) recorded an 8-1 victory at No. 1 singles before the Express notched back-to-back 8-0 sweeps at No. 2 and No. 3. Sophomore Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) and classmate Miku Kugo (Toyota, Aichi, Japan) were the victors at No. 2 doubles while sophomores Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) and Mizuki Furuta (Bunkyo, Tokyo, Japan) claimed the win at No. 3 doubles.

Vanno defeated her No. 1 singles opponent by a 6-0, 6-1 margin while Kugo set down her counterpart at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-0. Heath blanked her No. 3 singles opponent (6-0, 6-0) while Benedetto, Hunt and Furuta shutout their opponents at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Wells will face-off against the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Abington on Saturday, Apr. 19 at 10:00 a.m. Both teams boast unblemished league records and the winner will claim the NEAC West Division Regular Season title – the Express last boasted a division title in the 2011-12 season, running through the league calendar with six straight wins without a loss.
