Women's Tennis Falters At Houghton, 8-1

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Junior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) picked up a victory at No. 1 singles for the Wells College women's tennis team in their 8-1 loss at Houghton Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Wells dips to 1-6 overall in the non-conference portion of their schedule while Houghton improves to 6-10 on the year.

In all-time series history, today's victory by Houghton is their first in seven total matches. Wells had previously beaten the Highlanders six-straight times dating back to a 3-2 victory on Oct. 14, 1975 and, most recently, the Express posted a 6-3 win at home on March 29, 2014 in Aurora.

Benedetto slipped past her No. 1 singles counterpart, Bethany Chesebro, via scores of 6-1 and 6-3. The Highlanders, however, captured convincing victories throughout singles play. The tandem of freshman Danielle Bautista (Moorpark, Calif.) and freshman Elaine Dermady (Syracuse, N.Y.) at No. 2 doubles had the closest match of the day, but fell by an 8-3 score.

The Express return to action Wednesday, Apr. 1 as they open North Eastern Athletic Conference play hosting the College of Saint Elizabeth at 4 p.m. at the Wells College Tennis Courts.
