Women's Tennis Upended By Penn St.-Abington, 5-4

AUBURN, N.Y. – The Wells College women's tennis team was saddled with a 5-4 loss to Penn St.-Abington following Friday afternoon's match at the Champions For Life Sports Center. Wells (4-8, 3-2 NEAC) drops to 3-2 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference while the Nittany Lions improve to 13-1 overall and to 6-0 within league play.

Wells trailed 2-1 exiting doubles play as the No. 1 doubles tandem of junior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) and senior Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) notched an 8-3 win. Heath and Benedetto would later post key victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, to account for three of their team's four points in the match.

The Express narrowly missed victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles as freshman Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) opened up a 6-4 lead in the first set of her No. 3 singles matchup, but Sheena Phillip came from behind to defeat Maturine in the next two sets. Freshman Danielle Bautista (Moorpark, Calif.) dropped a first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), before falling 6-4 to her No. 4 singles opponent.

Freshman Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) had her team's fourth win of the day, defeating her No. 6 singles counterpart by an 8-6 margin.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Apr. 18 as they host Bryn Athyn at 1 p.m. on the Wells College Tennis Courts in Aurora. Seniors Heath and Victoria Candida (Schenectady, N.Y.) will play in their final career home match on Senior Day.
