Women's Tennis Concludes Regular Season With Win

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – In its final match of the regular season, the Wells College women's tennis team posted an 8-1 victory over North Eastern Athletic Conference-rival Keuka College on Sunday. With the win, Wells concludes the regular season with a 6-8 overall record alongside a 5-2 mark within conference play. Keuka dips to 7-3 overall and to 4-3 within the league.

By finishing within the upper half of the conference's teams, Wells has qualified for the NEAC postseason for the fourth-straight season. Dating back to the very first NEAC postseason in 2007, Wells has missed the playoffs only once (2010-11) and will look to secure their first team championship in the sport of women's tennis.

Wells posted back-to-back wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as senior Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.) and junior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) defeated their opponent, 8-5, at the top flight. Freshman Danielle Bautista (Moorpark, Calif.) and sophomore Nicole Sanborn (Onondaga, N.Y.) shut down their Keuka counterparts by an 8-6 margin.

Despite losing at No. 3 doubles, Wells swept singles play to earn the decisive 8-1 victory. Heath powered past Shelby Morseman at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, while Benedetto checked in with a 6-0, 6-1 sweep of Heidi Van Buskirk in No. 2 singles. Maturine secured a No. 3 singles win, 7-5, 6-2, while Sanborn turned in a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Freshman Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) defeated Melissa Mason, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 singles.

Despite falling behind 6-3 at No. 4 singles, Bautista rallied to post a 6-0 win before winning the tiebreaker by a 10-8 score.
