Women's Tennis Powers Past Bryn Athyn, 7-2

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Wells College women's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 victory over North Eastern Athletic Conference-rival Bryn Athyn College on Sunday. Wells moves to 2-4 overall and to 1-1 within conference play while the Lions dip to 0-2 on the season.

Wells overcame an early 2-0 hole as the team was forced to forfeit No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles prior to the match. Despite that adversity, the Express were perfect at the remaining seven flights to capture its first conference win of the year.

Senior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) partnered with Yuna Furusawa (Hirakata, Osaka, Japan) at the top doubles flight to easily dispatch the Bryn Athyn duo by an 8-0 score. Junior Nicole Sanborn (Onondaga, N.Y.) and senior Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) followed with a blanking of the No. 2 doubles tandem from Bryn Athyn to create a 2-1 edge for the Express entering singles play.

Benedetto would defeat Bryn Athyn's Nicole Rogan at the top singles flight (6-1, 6-2) before Hunt would breeze past Sydney Elder at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Sanborn and Furusawa took down their No. 3 and No. 4 singles counterparts, respectively, while sophomore Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) rounded out the victories for the Express at No. 5 singles.

A senior captain, Benedetto boasts 23 career singles victories to rank fifth all-time in the team's history dating back to the 1975 season. Her career singles winning percentage is .622, the eighth-best of all women's tennis players to have won at least 10 matches.

Additionally, Wells has now won 22 of its last 28 regular season conference matches since the 2011-12 women's tennis season.

Wells will travel to Oswego State University this Saturday, Apr. 9 for a high noon showdown with the Lakers.
