Women's Tennis Ousted By Penn St.-Berks, 5-1

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – The Wells College women's tennis team was defeated by Penn St.-Berks by a 5-1 score in the semifinal round of the North Eastern Athletic Conference West Division Team Tournament on Wednesday. Wells concludes the team portion of its schedule with a 6-7 overall record while the Nittany Lions move to 7-8 on the year. 

The Nittany Lions won five sets before the Express on Wednesday, securing the victory while earning a spot in the NEAC West Division Championship on Thursday, Apr. 28 at 10 a.m. Wells will play the Wolfpack from Keuka College in the consolation team match at the same time. The individual NEAC tournament will begin later in the afternoon on Thursday. 

The No. 1 doubles tandem of senior Brooke Benedetto (Williamstown, N.Y.) and Yuna Furusawa (Hirakata, Osaka, Japan) picked up an 8-6 victory, earning the lone point for Wells in the match. Benedetto extended her own program record by earning her 31st career doubles win with the result. 

Senior Kevisha Hunt (Germantown, Md.) and junior Nicole Sanborn (Onondaga, N.Y.) narrowly lost their bout at No. 2 doubles, falling 8-5, while sophomore Kamarie Maturine (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and classmate Kate Wells (Gardner, Mass.) were swept by an 8-0 score at No. 3 doubles. 

Sanborn and Furusawa fell in their No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Kate Wells battled her No. 6 counterpart to a 6-3, 6-3 loss. The remaining singles matches were in progress by the time the Nittany Lions clinched victory and, consequently, were halted immediately.
