Women's Volleyball Collects First Ever Program Victory


CANTON, N.Y. –
Two different players recorded 13 kills as the Wells College women's volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory over the Eagles of Green Mountain College in the opening game of the SUNY Canton Tournament Saturday morning. With the victory, the Express' overall record evens at 1-1 on the young season. The Eagles fall to 0-3 overall on the year.

The Eagles posted the first set victory, a 25-22 decision, but the Express rebounded to run off three-straight set victories to earn their first win in program history. In total, six different players recorded at least one kill as freshmen Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.) and Katie Curtin (Cassville, N.Y.) recorded 13 kills on the day. Butts made only five errors en route to a .267 hitting percentage.

Freshman setter Taryn Heath (Homer, N.Y.) set up 29 Express kills while also chipping in three errorless kills of her own for a .500 hitting percentage. On the day, Wells College tallied 22 service aces, with libero Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) posting seven of her own. Defensively, Loeven also contributed 19 of the Express' 33 digs in the match.

Freshman outside hitter Gina Cairns (Delhi, N.Y.) contributed four kills alongside four service aces and four digs. Courtney Wein (Martville, Pa.) recorded three kills, three service aces and two digs defensively to help lead the Express to victory.
