Volleyball Swept At Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. – The Wells College women's volleyball team posted back-to-back 3-0 losses to the Nittany Lions of Penn State University at Altoona and the Cougars of Misericordia University Saturday afternoon. With the losses, the Express are riding a seven game losing streak and fall to 1-9 overall on the season. The Nittany Lions improved their overall record to 4-9 at day's end while the Cougars overall record stands at 6-4.

PSU Altoona swept the Express in three sets, 25-13, 25-11 and 25-19. As a team, the Express posted a positive cumulative hitting percentage (.029), but committed 10 receiving errors in the contest. Freshmen Courtney Wein (Martville, N.Y.) and Katie Curtin (Cassville, N.Y.) each tied for the team lead with four kills apiece, while Curtin did not commit a single error in the first game (.667 hitting percentage). Wein also chipped in two service aces. Defensively, Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) led the way with eight digs on the day. Taryn Heath (Homer, N.Y.) posted nine assists on 14 Express kills.

For the Nittany Lions, Mariah McDowell posted 10 of the team's 28 kills alongside a .316 hitting percentage. Marina Cotarelo set up 16 kills for the team while three players recorded eight digs defensively for PSU Altoona. The Nittany Lions also forced home 10 service aces and posted 42 digs cumulatively.

Against Misericordia, the Express posted a 3-0 loss, dropping three sets 15-25, 17-25 and 24-26. For the second game of the day, the Express hit a collective .105. Freshman Leilani Yasutake (Germantown, N.Y.) led the way with a .500 hitting percentage, forcing home two kills against zero errors. Yasutake also set a season high mark with two block assists against Misericordia. Curtin posted seven kills to lead the team for the second straight game. Heath added an additional 13 assists in the game to bring her day's total to 22. Loeven once again led the team with 16 digs to her credit.

The Cougars saw Cailin McCullion lead the way with nine kills on the afternoon. Nicole Korgeski set up 23 Cougar kills while also leading the way defensively with eight digs. In the opening set, the team hit a collective .444, racking up 18 kills against only two errors as they captured the first set 25-15.
