Volleyball Defeats Brockport St., Loses At Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Wells College women's volleyball team picked up a 3-0 victory over The College at Brockport before losing by the same score to Houghton on Saturday. Versus the Golden Eagles, the Express won in straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 26-24) before losing in straight sets (26-24, 25-10, 25-19) to the host Highlanders. With the split, Wells evens their overall record at 3-3.

With a win last evening against Keystone, this afternoon's victory over the Golden Flyers gave the Express back-to-back victories for the first time in the modern-era of Wells women's volleyball. The last winning streak by the Express spanned four matches from Nov. 4, 1976 to Nov. 8, 1976 as Wells edged Roberts Wesleyan, Rochester Inst., Canisius and Nazareth.

Wells dispatched the Golden Flyers with a strong all-around performance. Freshman Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Hilo, Hawaii) posted nine kills on 24 attacks, committing only three errors for a team-best .250 hitting percentage. Freshman Eliza Schwab (Hartland, N.Y.) set a career-high mark with 16 assists and also picked up a double-double with 13 digs defensively. Schwab was joined by classmate Olyvia Brazier (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and senior Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapa'a, Hawaii) with double-digit dig totals.

The College at Brockport saw a team-leading 11 kills from Amanda Riebe. Noelle Poloncarz set up 18 of her team's 23 kills while Jaime Snyder registered a team-best three service aces and 18 digs.

Houghton, who faced-off against the Express for the second time in a week, was efficient with their offensive attack after committing only 10 attacking errors on 79 swings. Wells saw seven kills apiece from junior Vashti Nettles (Long Beach, Calif.) and Leite-Ah Yo while Schwab racked up 19 assists. Defensively, Brazier and Artaho-Aki chipped in with 10 digs apiece.

The Highlanders were led by Hattie Burgher's eight kills. Anna Coryell set up 25 of her team's 29 kills while Laurel Wroblicky racked up 11 digs to help the cause.

Wells hits the road this Friday, Sept. 12 as they face-off against the Lakers from Oswego State University in a 4 p.m. road match. The Express will also battle St. Lawrence, Alfred and Bard across the two day invitational.
