Women's Volleyball Blanks Pratt, Gwynedd Mercy

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Wells College women's volleyball team posted back-to-back 3-0 victories against the Pratt Institute and Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday at the latter's campus. The Express handed Pratt their first loss of the season via set scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-15 before also setting down Gwynedd Mercy in straight sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-13). Wells now boasts a 10-6 record exiting play this weekend and have won seven of their last eight matches dating back to Sept. 13.

Senior Jessilyn Artaho-Aki (Kapa'a, Hawaii) registered 14 kills and committed only one error on 28 attacks against Pratt in the opening match of the day, coming up one kill shy of tying the all-time program record in a three-set match. As a team, the Express hit .300 to rank third all-time in single match hitting percentage while 41 team kills in the three-set match is a team record.

Freshman Eliza Schwab (Hartland, N.Y.) set up 23 of her team's 41 kills, leading the team in assists while sophomore Meredith Kadjeski (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) hammered home six service aces in the match. Freshman Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Hilo, Hawaii) dug out 14 visiting attacks, leading the team.

Against Gwynedd Mercy, junior Vashti Nettles (Long Beach, Calif.) registered eight total blocks to double the previous program record of four. Five of the blocks were of the solo variety, setting the team record for any match. Schwab posted 26 assists in the match against the Griffins, tying the program record for assists in a three-set match (26, Taryn Heath (Truxton, N.Y.), Bryn Athyn, 09/21/14).

Leite-Ah Yo posted a team-best nine kills in the afternoon's final match. As a team, Wells posted 13 service aces against the Griffins that includes a team-high five by junior Zakarra Butts (Cortland, N.Y.). Junior Nicole Loeven (Pawling, N.Y.) racked up a team-best 14 digs in the match.

Wells will participate in the second NEAC North Crossover Weekend beginning on Saturday, Oct. 4 as they face-off against Morrisville State College at 2 p.m. The Express will also play SUNY Cobleskill, SUNYIT and the host Wildcats from Cazenovia College.
