Women's Volleyball Set Back By Oswego St., 3-0

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Wells College women's volleyball team was shut out by Oswego State University in Tuesday's season-opener. The Express fall to 0-1 on the young season while Oswego State moves to 1-0 on the year.

Wells, shut out by set scores of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-13, posted a combined negative hitting percentage for the first time since last year's tilt against the Lakers. Offensively, Wells was led by senior Vashti Nettles (Long Beach, Calif.) and her nine kills while sophomore Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Hilo, Hawaii) posted five kills. Sophomore Eliza Schwab (Hartland, N.Y.) set up 14 of her team's 20 kills while classmate Olyvia Brazier (Stony Brook, N.Y.) racked up 13 digs defensively.

The Express opened up a 7-4 lead in the first set but quickly relinquished the lead by allowing a run of five-straight points to the hosts. Oswego State used another 5-0 run after Wells cut their lead to 19-17 and never looked back, taking the first set 25-21. The Express committed 10 attacking errors in the opening frame.

Wells never led in the second set but did make things interesting, using a Nettles kill to cut into the Lakers lead, 15-14. Five of the set's next six points, however, went in favor of Oswego State and they went on to win 25-20.

Tied at 10 in the decisive third set, the Lakers dominated the remainder of the match and posted 11-straight points to stun Wells. Once again, attacking errors proved to be the downfall for Wells after posting eight alone in the third set.

Oswego State was led by six kills from Jessica Long. Lauren Edwards posted 11 assists and tied for the team lead with Rachael Ruggaber with eight digs.

The Express return to action Friday, Sept. 4 as they face-off against Utica and Nazareth on the campus of SUNY Cortland, starting at 3 p.m.
