Women's Volleyball Earns Comeback Victory vs. Penn St.-Berks

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Wells College women's volleyball team overcame a first set loss to defeat the Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Berks on Friday at the Horst Athletic Center. Wells (4-6, 1-0 NEAC) earns its first victory in North Eastern Athletic Conference play while the Nittany Lions fall to 4-6 (0-1 NEAC).

The Express lost the first set by a 25-20 score, but a thrilling 27-25 win in the second set keyed a dramatic comeback that saw the Express take the third set (25-21) and fourth set (25-16) to avenge last season's loss to the Nittany Lions in the First Round of the NEAC postseason. Steadily improving after the first set loss, Wells capped off the comeback with a dominant fourth set performance that saw the team rack up 14 kills and zero attack errors for a .483 attacking percentage.

Sophomore Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo (Hilo, Hawaii) tied with senior Vashti Nettles (Long Beach, Calif.) with 13 kills, the match-high for both teams. Junior Meredith Kadjeski (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) hammered home five service aces while sophomore Olyvia Brazier (Stony Brook, N.Y.) led the way with 16 digs. Setter Eliza Schwab (Hartland, N.Y.) assisted with 38 of her team's 47 kills and chipped in with 11 digs. Freshman Amanda Springer (Norwood, Mass.) also had a solid game for the Express as the rookie posted eight kills and only one error along with a team-leading three block assists.

In the second set, Wells trailed the Nittany Lions at set point with the score at 24-23. Nettles, however, stepped up big for the Express by recording three of her team's final five points via kills to lift her team to a 27-25 victory. The third set was dominated by Kadjeski, who posted four kills on seven swings while adding two service aces.

In the fourth set, Wells closed out the victory by recording six-straight points after the Nittany Lions tied the score at 13. The Express ultimately posted 12 of the game's next 15 points, slamming the door with a Nettles kill. Nettles joined Leite-Ah Yo in the fourth set with five kills with the former turning in five kills on only six errorless attacks.

The Nittany Lions were led by Cassidy Schultz's 11 kills. Corinne Watson assisted 29 kills while Schultz posted a double-double with 20 digs to her credit.

Wells will take on Penn College at 12 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 19 before playing the host Chargers from Lancaster Bible College at 2 p.m. in the season's first NEAC Crossover Weekend.
