Women's Volleyball Edged By Cortland On The Road

The Wells College women's volleyball team traveled to SUNY Cortland and stretched the Red Dragons to five sets before falling by a 3-2 score at Alumni Arena on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Set scores were 25-16, 22-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-8. The Express is 9-5 on the season and Cortland is 9-7. Wells continues a stretch of non-conference matches on Saturday against SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Plattsburgh at an event hosted by Utica College.

Cortland built a large early lead and cruised to a first-set victory, but Wells came back to win the next two sets.

In the second set, Wells took a 10-8 lead. Cortland scored six straight to go up 14-10 and eventually held a 17-12 advantage before Wells rallied. A 9-1 run by the Express was highlighted by two Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo kills. The set was tied 22-22, before Wells scored the last three points on a Jackie Allen kill and two Cortland errors.

An early 9-1 run for Wells in the third set put the Express in front and they never trailed the rest of the way. Cortland pulled the score to within 17-16, but a timeout for Wells turned the momentum and the Express won seven of the next nine points and they closed the set with a 25-19 victory.

A back-and-forth fourth set was tied 10 times early on, then Wells pulled ahead 14-11. Cortland rallied to win nine of 11 points and held a 20-16 lead and the Red Dragons won 25-18 to force a deciding set.

Wells jumped to 4-1 lead in the fifth set, including kills by Amanda Springer and Jackie Allen and an ace from Olyvia Schwab. Cortland came back to take a 6-5 lead and the set was last tied at 6-6. Cortland scored the next three and after a Wells point, the Red Dragons scored the next five. Eventually Cortland won 15-8.

Wells was led by 10 kills each from Brazier and Allen. Leite-Ah Yo had nine kills. Brazier had three service aces and Springer had two. Eliza Schwab had 31 assists and two solo blocks. Springer and Meredith Kadjeski each had two solo blocks. Leite Ah-Yo had 30 digs and Nadine Pershyn had 20 digs.
