Oswego State Edges Wells Women's Volleyball In Five Sets

The Wells College women's volleyball team battled back from a two-set deficit and extended its match Wednesday to five sets but eventually came out on the short end of a 3-2 defeat against visiting Oswego State on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the Schwartz Athletic Center. Set scores were 25-22, 25-20, 26-28, 24-26, 15-11. Oswego State improved to 13-11 on the year and Wells stands at 15-7 overall.

The Lakers took the first two sets and in the second set the teams combined for 29 kills and just seven errors in an efficient offensive set.

Wells came back to win the third set by a 28-26 score. The Express raced out to a 13-4 lead, and held a 24-19 lead before Oswego State fought off four set points and tied the set at 24-24. Wells took one-point leads three times in a row and went ahead 27-26 on a kill by Amanda Springer. A hitting error by Oswego State on the next point gave Wells the third set.

The Lakers built a 19-14 fourth-set advantage and Wells rallied with four of the next five points to get within 20-18. Oswego State led 24-21, but Wells won the fourth set by taking five points in a row, which included two kills from Meredith Kadjeski and one from Jackie Allen, and two attack errors by the Lakers.

In the fifth set, Oswego State led throughout even though Wells closed the margin to one point on three occasions.

Statistical leaders for Wells included Anuhea Leite-Ah Yo with 14 kills and Jackie Allen with 12 kills. Meredith Kadjeski and Amanda Springer had 10 kills each. Eliza Schwab had 35 assists. Nadine Pershyn led Wells with 26 digs, while Leite-Ah Yo had 16 digs and Schwab had 14. Renee Bartosz served three aces.

The Express heads to Utica this weekend for three North Eastern Athletic Conference matches against SUNY Cobleskill, SUNY Polytechnic Institute and Morrisville State College on Saturday and Sunday at SUNY Poly.
