Women's Volleyball Starts NEAC Play With Win

The Wells College women's volleyball team began its North Eastern Athletic Conference season with a 3-1 victory over Keuka College on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Keuka. Wells dropped the first set before rallying to win the next three. Set scores were 22-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22.

Wells is 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the NEAC. Keuka is 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Over the course of the match, Keuka had 48 kills and 49 hitting errors for a -.006 hitting percentage. A big part of that was the presence at the net for Wells, as the Express totaled two solo blocks and 22 block assists in the match. Rachel Anderson and Maritza Scharoun each had eight block assists. Scharoun added a solo block. Amanda Springer had one solo block and three block assists.

Wells had just four kills in the opening set and fell 25-22.

In the second set, Wells had 10 kills and hit .172. The set was tied 16-16 when Wells won five of the next six points to take a 21-17 lead. Wells closed out the set by a 25-21 score.

The third set was a 25-18 victory for the Express. Wells had a five-point run to take an 11-6 lead, and added six-straight points later in the set to extend its advantage to 23-15.

Wells clinched the match in the fourth set. The Express rallied from a 10-5 deficit in the set, and Keuka held a 20-18 lead before Wells won seven of the last nine points of the set.

Jackie Allen had eight kills for Wells and Rachel Anderson added seven. Lorissa Parks had 13 assists and Jordan Stoops had 12. Jazzmyne Williams served five aces and led the team with 16 digs. Nanako Otsuka had 11 digs.

Wells will play this weekend at a tournament hosted by Union College with two matches Friday and two matches Saturday.
