Split Weekend For Women's Volleyball At Union

The Wells College women's volleyball team had two wins and two losses on the weekend at the Union College Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 14-15 in Schenectady, N.Y. On Friday, Wells defeated Mount St. Vincent and lost to Skidmore. In Saturday's matches, Wells fell to host Union and came back to defeat Plattsburgh.

Jackie Allen, the standing North Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, was named to the all-tournament team. It is the second week in a row that she has earned all-tournament team honors following her performance at the University of Rochester tournament on Sept. 7-8.

Wells started its week with a NEAC win over Keuka College on Tuesday. The Express is back in conference play Wednesday, Sept. 19 at Morrisville State. Wells is 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

WELLS 3, MOUNT ST. VINCENT 0

Wells swept its way to a weekend-opening victory by set scores of 25-14, 25-20, 25-16. Mount St. Vincent had a negative hitting percentage with 26 errors and 23 kills, as nine Wells blocks contributed to that statistic. Amanda Springer had one solo block and five block assists. Maritza Scharoun had one solo block and two block assists. Rachel Anderson had three block assists.

The Express hit .229 for the match with 32 kills against 13 errors. Allen and Jazzmyne Williams had eight kills each. Anderson added seven. Jordan Stoops had 15 assists and served four aces. Williams and Nanko Otsuka each had nine digs.

SKIDMORE 3, WELLS 2

Wells dropped the first two sets before rallying to force a decisive fifth set, which Skidmore won in extra points. Set scores were 25-15, 25-13, 16-25, 24-26, 17-15. Both teams attacked effectively in the fifth set as Wells had a .292 hitting percentage and Skidmore hit .320.

Allen totaled 19 kills and nine digs. Williams had 13 kills and 12 digs. Gabby Rivera had 17 digs. Jordan Stoops had 24 assists and Lorissa Parks had 18 assists. Martiza Scharoun had one solo block and four block assists.

Wells held an 11-10 lead in the fifth set but Skidmore scored the next four points. The Express fought off four total set points before Skidmore closed out the match with back-to-back kills.

UNION 3, WELLS 1

In Saturday's first match, the host institution won by set scores of 19-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-14. Wells had 10 kills in the opening set and 13 kills with a .367 hitting percentage in the third set. Williams finished the match with 11 kills and Anderson had nine.

Anderson and Scharoun each had one solo block and five block assists. Stoops had 15 assists and Parks had 14. Parks and Allen each served three aces.

Three Wells players had double-figures in digs as Otsuka had 15, Williams had 13, and Allen had 12.

WELLS 3, PLATTSBURGH 2

Wells closed the weekend with a five-set win over Plattsburgh. Set scores were 18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 15-11. Wells trailed 4-0 in the decisive set but pulled back to even the score 10-10. After Plattsburgh took an 11-10 lead, Wells won the next five points to take the victory. Rachel Anderson had two kills and Jackie Allen had the decisive kill during that run, and all three were assisted by Jordan Stoops.

Wells served 14 aces in the match including four from Allen and Parks and three from Anderson. Scharoun had one solo block and six block assists. Allen led Wells with 17 kills and Anderson had 15. Stoops had 31 assists in the match and Parks had 16. Otsuka (19), Allen (17), Williams (15), and Stoops (14) reached double-figures in digs.
