Women's Volleyball Falls In Five Sets In Playoff Match

The Wells College women's volleyball team lost a narrow five-set match against Lancaster Bible College in the semifinals of the North Eastern Athletic Conference playoffs on Saturday, Nov. 3 at Morrisville, New York. The Express took the second and third sets but LBC won the final two sets in extra points to claim the victory. Set scores were 25-22, 17-25, 17-25, 28-26, 18-16.

The Express finished its season with a 17-12 overall record. It's the fifth year in a row that Wells has advanced to the NEAC semifinals. Lancaster Bible is 21-8 and advanced to the championship match where they will take on host Morrisville State on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.

The Chargers took the opening set behind a strong hitting attack with 12 kills and just one error.

Wells won the first four points of the second set and built an early 11-4 lead. Two kills from Amanda Springer and one from Jazzmyne Williams clinched the second set for the Express.

The Express used a 7-1 run in the middle part of the third set to build an 18-12 lead after the set was tied 11-11. Lakshmi Martin had two kills in the run. Wells hit .278 in the third set with 15 kills and five errors on 36 swings.

Wells held a 20-15 lead in the fourth set by Lancaster Bible came back to tie the score as the set went to extra points. Each team got a side out on set point, but Lancaster Bible took the last two points to win the set 28-26.

Wells built a 9-5 lead in the fifth set and Lancaster Bible took a timeout. The Chargers won the next seven points and Wells used both of its timeouts during the run. A hitting error by LBC broke the stretch and Wells trailed 12-10 when Williams served an ace to bring Wells within one. The Express fought off three match points and the set was tied 16-16. A pair of kills by the Chargers earned the final two points and captured the decisive set 18-16.

Jazzmyne Williams led Wells with 15 kills, Rachel Anderson had 11, and Lakshmi Martin had 10. Maritza Scharoun had nine block assists for Wells, and Anderson had one solo block and six block assists. Jordan Stoops had 23 assists and Lorissa Parks had 20 assists. Parks served two aces. Five players had double-figures in digs including a team-best 19 for Jackie Allen. Nanako Otsuka had 16 digs, Williams and Stoops had 12 each, and Parks had 11.
