Woman’s Volleyball’s Three-Game Streak Halted after Saturday Split

The Wells College women's volleyball team upped its winning streak to three games with a 3-0 victory over Keuka before Houghton College snapped the Express' string with a 3-1 win over Wells in a pair of contests at Houghton on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The team won its first four sets of the day with the first three against Keuka and the fourth-consecutive in the opening set against Houghton. It was in the latter set that Jackie Allen became just the second player in program history to record 1,000 career kills and finished the weekend with 1,008 and counting. The Syracuse native also needs just six more digs to also hit the 1,000 plateau.

Wells started the morning by besting Keuka by set scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-17. The Express appeared on a roll with an opening set 25-20 set victory against Houghton 25-20, but the Highlanders regrouped to take the next three with scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-18.

In the team's sweep against Keuka, five different Wells players registered double-digit performances with Allen leading the team in kills with a dozen, while also adding 15 digs. Gabby Rivera led the team in digs with 17, while Jordan Stoops added a team-high 18 assists. Also with impressive totals were Lorissa Parks with 16 assists and Brittany Kropp with 10 kills. The trio of Maritza Scharoun, Makenzie Drown and Jazzmyne Williams combined for nine blocks with Scharoun leading the way with four.

Against Houghton, Allen again led the attack with 14 kills and was aided by a combined 30 assists from Stoops and Parks. Rivera led the team in digs in both matches with 15 against the Highlanders, while Nanako Otsuka added 11. Scharoun was a tower at the net with eight blocks (three solo), while Williams added five block assists.

The women's volleyball team continues on the road with a 7 p.m. matchup at SUNY Poly on Thursday, Oct. 10.
