Women’s Volleyball Team Rallies Twice to Beat Oswego

The Wells College women's volleyball team found itself down by 1-0 and 2-1 set scores before rallying in the match's final two sets for a 3-2 road win at Oswego on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

The Lakers are one of the premier teams of the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Oswego is currently third in SUNYAC standings and has the third-best overall SUNYAC record based on win percentage at 18-7.

With Oswego holding a 2-1 advantage, the Lakers were looking to close out the match in the fourth set by building a pair of four-point leads in the early going. Oswego looked in control at 14-11, but Wells responded with the next five points to take the lead at 15-14. The Lakers quickly took back the lead but both teams battled with four ties at points 17, 18, 19 and 20. The Express dug deep and got the next three for a 23-20 lead and finished the fourth set with two of the last four points to even the match at 2-2 with a 25-22 fourth-set victory.

In the fifth and deciding set, neither team could establish any dominance in the early going with six successive ties on points 4-9. Wells emerged as the first team to break the deadlocks by establishing a two-point lead at 11-9. Oswego would get as close as 11-10 before Wells closed out the comeback with four of the last five points to take the match at 3-2 with a 15-11 fifth-set win.

The Express got off to a slow start in the first set after Oswego broke a 4-4 tie and never looked back in handing the Express a 25-16 first-set loss. The second set remained close with Wells clinging to a two-point cushion at 10-8 before getting nine of the next 11 points to take command at 19-10 before winning the second set at 25-16. The Express held a three-point lead in the third set at 15-12 before a five-point Oswego rally gave them command at 17-15. Wells would comeback to tie the third set at 21-21, but the final rally belonged to the Lakers with a 25-22 third-set win.

Jackie Allen led the attack with 22 kills and added 18 digs and a pair of blocks. Jazzmyne Williams added a pair of blocks to go with 21 kills that was just one shy of matching Allen.

Gabby Rivera finished with a team-high 20 digs with a pair of aces and assists. Jordan Stoops helped the attack with 33 assists and added 15 digs. Maritza Scharoun led the team in blocks with four. Lorissa Parks registered 16 assists for Wells while Nanako Otsuka recorded six kills and a pair of aces.

The women's volleyball team travels to Penn College this weekend for a pair of matches on Saturday, Oct. 26 beginning with a 12 p.m. match against host Penn and followed by a 2 p.m. match against Penn State-Berks.
