Middlebrook Captures First At SUNYIT Wildcat Weekend Classic

MARCY, N.Y. – Junior Emily Middlebrook (Newark, N.Y.) placed first amongst the field of competitors as the Wells College cross country teams competed at the 2013 SUNYIT Wildcat Weekend Classic on Saturday. Middlebrook and the women's team placed second overall amongst the 17 team field while the men's squad finished in 18th place out of 19 teams.

Excluding head-to-head team events, Middlebrook draws her fourth first place finish in her three year career. She placed first in the Cazenovia Homecoming Invitational on Oct. 1, 2011 and also drew back-to-back first place finishes at the NEAC Championships in 2011 and 2012.

Middlebrook posted a 5K time of 20:11, capturing first place over Chloe Mattilio of Paul Smith's College by fractions of a second. Freshman Deaven Theriault (Ludlow, Mass.) finished second amongst Express runners and placed 10th amongst all runners with a time of 21:00, a pace of 6:46. Sophomore Katie Lamanna (Constableville, N.Y.) was 23rd amongst the field, completing the course in 21:56.

Junior Anastasia Benson (Rockford, Ill.) checked in with a time of 23:33, placing 48th out of 187 runners in the race. Freshmen Jenn VanWormer (Phoenix, N.Y.) and Bailey Brown (Marcy, N.Y.) clocked in at 23:36 and 25:43, respectively, while Veronica Frisenda (Patterson, Calif.) and Paige Fralick (Mexico, N.Y.) rounded out the field at 26:08 and 31:10.

In the men's race, junior Paul Hernon (New Hartford, N.Y.) ran at a 6:21/mile pace while junior Andrew Judson (Court Gambrillis, Md.) was second for Wells, posting a time of 35:42 to finish 120th against the field of 164. Freshmen Ky'aire Reed (Trenton, N.J.) notched a time of 36:04 while classmate Andrew Zellers (Seneca Falls, N.Y.) ran at a 7:38/mile pace to finish with a time of 37:54. Raymond Soriano (Laredo, Texas) completed the course with a time of 49:08.

Wells returns to action Saturday, Oct. 19 as they battle other schools in the Cross Country Only Championship, held at Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva, N.Y. at 11:00 a.m.
