Season In Review: Wells College Women's Cross Country

Throughout the summer of 2015, the Wells College Department of Athletics website will look back at the "year that was". Starting with men's lacrosse on Thursday, June 11, a comprehensive "season in review" for each of Wells varsity sports will be posted, giving fans not only a look back but also a look forward to the upcoming season of play.

The Wells women's cross country team boasted its largest roster in recent memory en route to an impressive 35th place performance at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regionals in mid-November. Led by a large senior class, the team's four-year runners capped off impressive careers and will graduate as the most successful class in program history.

NOTABLES

  • AT THE REGIONALS: Wells finished 35th against the 40-team field at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional Cross Country Championships on Nov. 15 at Genesee Valley Park. The Express, fielding their second-ever team at the NCAA Regional level, competed on the 6K course in the University of Rochester-hosted event. The Express finished ahead of Cazenovia College in the race – the Wildcats placed second overall in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Championships but fell to 40th place at the NCAA Division III Regional.
  • STRONG FINISHES: Competing against the region's best talent, sophomore Deaven Theriault (Ludlow, Mass.) led the Express at the meet, placing 143rd amongst the field with a time of 24:37.7 to set a personal-best 6K time. Senior Katie Lamanna (Constableville, N.Y.) wrapped up her Wells career with a 230th place finish after completing the course in 27:34.1.
  • FIRST TEAM ALL-CONFERENCE: Theriault placed fourth overall at the North Eastern Athletic Conference Cross Country Championships on Nov. 1 at Kenilworth Park. With the first place finish, Theriault picked up First Team All-Conference honors for the second consecutive season. At the 2013 championship meet, Theriault placed fifth with a time of 21:01 as three separate runners earned All-Conference nods for the Express.
  • A PERSONAL BEST:  Theriault led all members of her team at the 2014 Hamilton College Cross Country Invitational on Oct. 11, posting a personal-best time of 19:17.30, the second-fastest time in team history. Emily Middlebrook '14 holds the all-time top-5K time of 19:08, set at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational on Sept. 29, 2012. Theriault beat the previous second place record of 19:28.95 (Middlebrook, 10/29/11) by more than 10 full seconds.
  • THE WEEK AFTER: After her personal-best on Oct. 11, Theriault followed it up with an eighth place finish amongst the field of 132 student-athletes at the Cross Country Only Championships on Saturday at Seneca Lake State Park. Last season, Theriault also placed eighth at the same event but improved her time by 13 seconds to finish in 20:18.6. She narrowly missed overtaking fellow North Eastern Athletic Conference runner Shelby McIntyre of Cazenovia for seventh place by just over two seconds.
  • HELPING THE COMMUNITY: The Wells College men's and women's cross country teams donated athletic clothing and shoes to the Southern Cayuga Junior/Senior High School in late February. The donations were accepted by Ms. Catharine Haight, the school's Director of Athletics and Assistant Principal.
  • SAYING GOODBYE: Wells graduated five competing seniors from last season's team, including Anastasia Benson, Paige Fralick, Veronica Frisenda, Lindsey Guzewicz and Lamanna. Guzewicz boasts the third-fastest 5K time in team history while Frisenda, Lamanna and Benson all rank within the top half of the best times in the history of the program.
