Bio

Ryan Stevens was named head baseball coach at Wells College in the fall of 2019.

During his first full season at Wells, Stevens took on an additional role with a promotion to assistant athletics director for recruiting.

In his first season at the helm at Wells, in a shortened year due to a health pandemic, Stevens needed just nine games to make school history with the team’s largest comeback in program history. Stevens has helped more than three dozen-plus players advance their careers from his last coaching stop and prior to that helped advance another four dozen-plus from professional ball.

Some other roles Stevens has held during the past decade-and-a-half of employment in baseball include general manager, associate coach, pitching coach, head scout, recruiting coordinator, program organizer, field manager, operations director, assistant general manager, and associate scout.

As a volunteer within the past 15 years, Stevens has contributed to baseball clinics, served as a hitting and pitching instructor, helped coach multiple teams in youth baseball, taught skill development to children with disabilities, and initiated a camp for underprivileged Native Americans.

After graduating from Sul Ross State University, Stevens went on to teach and serve as a graduate assistant with its athletic department. Stevens began scouting for MLB’s Washington Nationals prior to his post-baccalaureate tenure with SRSU and continued to represent the Nationals while in a dual role at SRSU in the Lone Star State.

Stevens’ advancement in professional baseball in Texas began with the Texarkana Gunslingers of the Continental Baseball League, where he went from assistant coach to general manager. His next stop was with the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos League as head coach and field manager for four seasons. In two professional stops over six seasons in various roles, Stevens was a part of nearly 300 wins with a pair of league championships, a division championship, and playoff appearances in each season for the teams he represented, while individually earning Pecos League Manager of the Year.

After relocating north and transitioning from professional to collegiate baseball, Stevens accepted an assistant baseball coaching and recruiting position with Ithaca College before being named head baseball coach at Tompkins Cortland in the National Junior College Athletic Association. During his five-year stint at Tompkins Cortland, Stevens spent time in the summer between collegiate seasons as either a head coach, or general manager in the New York Collegiate Baseball League and the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.

Between his time at Tompkins Cortland and the collegiate summer leagues, Stevens registered one division championship with three playoff appearances. With the Panthers, he ended a near-decade-long playoff draught after continued improvement during his tenure that included records for program wins and winning percentage.

Prior to coaching, Stevens played collegiate ball for SUNY Cobleskill and Frostburg State University.
