Baseball: "On This Day" 4-16-19

"On This Day" is a Wells College Athletics feature designed to look back over the past three seasons when most of our 2020 seniors began play for the Express and what highlights happened to Wells' spring teams on this day on April 16

Baseball: April 16, 2019

The Wells College baseball team took control with seven runs in the bottom of the fourth and six pitchers combined to keep Elmira in check as the Express won 14-8 over Elmira College on Tuesday, April 16 at the Wells Turf Field.

Dylan Nolan hit a two-run homer in the fourth, which was his 100th career hit. He is the first player to reach 100 career hits since baseball was instituted at Wells in 2017.

The Express took a 4-0 lead after three innings. Wells scored twice in the second on a squeeze bunt by Ian Crawford and sac fly by Kevin Spaeth. Tanner Dunkel doubled and Derek Shea singled to start the second and came in to score. In the third, Nolan hit a sac fly to bring in Jordan VanHerpe and Mark Yorkey later scored on a wild pitch.

Elmira tied it in the top of the fourth with four runs including an RBI double, run-scoring single, and two-run homer.

Wells' big inning came in the bottom half of the fourth. The first four batters reached and A.J. Nesci had a two-run single. The inning continued and the seven-run rally was capped by Nolan's two-run homer to center.

Elmira got a pair of runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth. Wells picked up insurance runs in the eighth on a wild pitch, RBI single, and RBI groundout.

Yorkey and Shea had three hits each and scored twice. Nolan homered, singled and drove in three. Dunkel and VanHerpe doubled and scored twice.

Johnny Hall started and pitched four innings. Five relievers worked an inning apiece as Zach Kemp, Jared Strait, and Shea pitched scoreless innings.
