"On This Day" is a Wells College Athletics feature designed to look back over the past three seasons when most of our 2020 seniors began play for the Express and what highlights happened to Wells' spring teams on this day on April 22
Women's Lacrosse: April 22, 2017
The Wells College women's lacrosse team furiously rallied and scored the final six goals of the game, including the overtime winner, in a 12-11 victory over Hilbert College on Saturday, April 22 at the Wells Turf Field.
Renee Bartosz scored the game-winning goal 3:11 into overtime on an assist from Mackenzie Maloney in the third consecutive overtime game for the Express.
Hilbert scored the first three goals of the first half in the opening minute of the game, but the Express came back to lead 6-5 at halftime.
Wells forced extra time by scoring five goals in the final five minutes of the second half to tie the score 11-11.
Bartosz started the scoring streak with a goal assisted by Julia Smith with 4:21 left. Smith scored an unassisted goal with 3:36 left, and Maloney scored three goals in a row to tie the game.
The opening draw control of overtime was corralled by Maloney. Wells had two shots but didn't convert and then turned the ball over. Hilbert cleared the ball downfield and had one shot wide and one shot saved by Express goalkeeper Anna Bozeat, and the first three-minute overtime segment ended.
The teams switched ends, Maloney had another draw control, carried the ball into the attacking zone and passed to Bartosz on the crease for the game-winning score.
Maloney finished the game with six goals and one assist. Bartosz scored three goals with one assist. Smith had two goals and two assists. Jessica Burbank scored the other goal for Wells.
Maloney, a sophomore, has 50 goals on the season for the Express. It is the second year in a row that she has scored 50 goals, and she now has 100 goals in her Wells career. She is the eighth player in program history to score 100 career goals.
Express goalkeeper Bozeat made 18 saves. Miranda Mingen had three caused turnovers and Burbank had two. Maloney led Wells with five ground balls and six draw controls.
