Express Dropped In Season Finale, 3-0

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College field hockey team posted a 3-0 loss to the Phoenix of Wilson College in the team's season finale Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Express conclude the 2012 field hockey season with an overall record of 4-10. The Phoenix reach double-digit win totals with an overall mark of 10-6.

Hillary Swartz forced home the game's first goal at 3:05 of the first half. Maggie Sipps carried the ball up the left flank and rocketed a shot into the crease area. Swartz won the ensuing ball battle and forced it past Express goalkeeper Kylie Nishioka (Encinitas, Calif.). Carrying a 1-0 lead into halftime, the Phoenix scored only 11:18 into the second half as Arissa Ward scored via a cross from Megan Schneck. Kimberly Leitima scored an unassisted goal in the 68th minute, adding additional insurance for the Phoenix.

In a pre-game ceremony, the field hockey team honored the graduating senior student-athletes for both sides, including Emily Gottshall (Coatesville, Pa.) and Shelby Moszkowicz (Rochester, N.Y.). Defenseman Madeline Bass (Lemon Grove, Calif.) was honored in a pre-game ceremony against Brockport State on Thursday, Oct. 11.

The Express conclude their season with several players entering the top-10 in program history in different categories. Freshman Courtney Bastian (West Winfield, N.Y.) becomes only the third rookie in program history to record 15 or more points in a single season – she ties Courtney Grosser (2011, 7-1=15) and trails Tracy Chappell (2002, 9-1=19) and Vicky Sherwood '06 (2002, 9-1=19). In goal, Nishioka's season save percentage of .774 (24 GA, 82 saves) ranks eighth all-time while her goals-against average of 2.96 places her fifth all-time in that category. Her four goaltending wins places her third all-time, trailing Amanda Catalano (2011, 5-9) and Ali Formicola '07 (2004, 5-8).

In the career record books, Nishoka concludes her freshman campaign ranked third all-time with a 2.96 goals-against average. Bastian concludes the year tied for 11th place all-time in program scoring with 15 points (7-1=15).
