Field Hockey Downed By Wilson In Double Overtime

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Wells College field hockey team was defeated in double-overtime for the second time this season on Sunday, falling to the host Phoenix from Wilson College by a 2-1 margin. Wells falls to 2-6 overall and to 1-2 within the North Eastern Athletic Conference while Wilson (6-4, 1-0 NEAC) earned its first-ever league victory.

With Sunday's loss to Wilson, Wells has concluded its first-ever NEAC season of play. With a 1-2 record, the Express will wait for the results of two additional conference matches (Wilson vs. Morrisville St., Wilson vs. Keuka) to determine if they have qualified for the championship game on Oct. 31, 2015.

Trailing by a 1-0 margin at halftime, junior Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) fired home a loose ball just inside the arc for the equalizer at 44:40. Wilson, however, maintained a strong offensive advantage in regulation time, going on to fire 14 shots as opposed to Wells' seven. The Express, however, played strong defense and forced the majority of their opponents' shots wide.

Wilson, however, secured the overtime victory after keeping Wells without a shot through 15:50 of extra time. The Phoenix were granted three penalty corners and took advantage of their first set play of the second overtime period, using an Annie Demmy goal off of a cross from Lauren Moss for the game-winning strike.

Moss also set up her team's first goal of the game at 24:39, scored off a pass from Miranda Long.

Wells goalkeeper Sydney Line (Northport, N.Y.) made four saves on six shots faced, drawing the loss. Kayla Butts earned the win for Wilson, making three saves on four shots.

The Express will take on Ithaca College on the road at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
