Fast Start Not Enough In 3-0 Field Hockey Loss

FERRUM, Va. – The Wells College field hockey team controlled play in the game's first 10 minutes, but the Marlins from Virginia Wesleyan College overwhelmed the Express down the stretch to secure a 3-0 victory on Sunday at Ferrum College. With the loss, Wells falls to 2-8 while the Marlins move to 4-9 on the year.

On their first shot of the game, Ashley Parker put Virginia Wesleyan up by a 1-0 margin at 11:51. Coming out of halftime, the Marlins put two quick goals on the board as Taylor Marshall scored an unassisted goal at 42:01 before Missy Stroup scored only 3:46 later to create a 3-0 advantage. Sam Jackson assisted her team's first and last goals of the afternoon.

Wells fired nine shots on the afternoon, placing six shots on frame, while the Marlins blasted 14 total shots. Virginia Wesleyan also held the 9-to-6 advantage on penalty corners. For Wells, junior Shianne Stokes (Mays Landing, N.J.) had seven of her team's nine total shots.

Express goalkeeper Kendrick Wilson (Collins, N.Y.) allowed three goals on six total shots faced while the Marlins' Skye Swain stepped up with a six-save shutout.

Wells will take on the host Panthers from Ferrum College at 2 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 11.
