Field Hockey Team Impressive in Defeat

The Wells College field hockey team was on the verge of victory by clinging to a 1-0 lead well into the second half before visiting Lancaster Bible College got a brief third-quarter surge to steal the victory away from the Express. The loss left Wells just a game shy of a share of first place in the NEAC.

The Express donned pink uniforms in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in an effort to support the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Upstate N.Y. out of East Syracuse. The team set-up an online GoFundMe page with all proceeds slated for the Komen Foundation. The team hopes to add to the several hundred dollars it has already received and will still be accepting donations after today's game at the following link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/wells-college-field-hockey-for-breast-cancer.

Whitney Coleman staked the Express to a 1-0 lead 22 minutes into the contest after taking a feed from Caitlin Lawrence. Wells held the lead for almost 15 minutes before the Chargers got a pair of goals in about a minute's span to go up 2-1 with just over eight minutes left in the third quarter. The Express rallied in the final quarter but could not find the equalizer.

Wells' goalkeeper Sabrina Burns had more than twice the amount of saves of her counterpart at the other end and helped keep the Express within striking distance with her performance that included thwarting an 18-3 penalty corner edge for the Chargers.

Burns finished with seven saves for a near .800 save percentage. The Express registered a half-dozen shots with four on net and Coleman leading the way with three shot attempts. Lawrence had a pair of shots with another coming from Hannah Koerner.

The Express hopes to even its NEAC record tomorrow with another NEAC matchup at home against Morrisville State with a 2 p.m. start. The game will honor the seniors from this year's team in the second of a three-game home stand.
