EXPRESS OUTPACE FIGHTING TIGERS

AURORA, N.Y. – The Wells College men's basketball team shot 45 percent from the floor in the second half, including 5-10 from behind the arc en route to an 86-67 victory over the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action Saturday afternoon in Aurora. With the victory the Express improve to 12-11 (9-4 NEAC) while the Fighting Tigers fall to 2-21 (2-11 NEAC).

 

Terry Harrison (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Express with a team high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Dave Foltz (Auburn, N.Y.) added 14 points, EJ Taylor (Tampa Bay, Fla.) chipped in with 12 points and Andre Sawyers (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with nine points and 10 rebounds to round out the top scorers for Wells.

 

The Express survived a strong shooting first half from the Fighting Tigers (50 percent from the floor, 4-6 from long range) to hold a slim 39-35 lead at the break.

 

Eight straight points by Foltz to start the second half, including two 3-pointers, propelled Wells to an early 12 point lead. Harrison added two free-throws and Foltz's second lay-up of the half pushed their lead to 16 (51-35) at the 16.38 mark of the second.

 

Wells never let Cobleskill closer than 11 points the rest of the half and, with less than seven minutes to play; Harrison hit four straight free-throws and followed with a steal and a dunk to extend the Express lead to a game high 26-points as Wells cruised to their fifth straight victory.

 

The Express pounded the ball inside in the second half, getting to the line19 times and hitting 14 of those shots while their defense picked up, forcing 11 turnovers on nine steals. Wells was also dominant on the glass holding a decisive 44-31 advantage, including 21 offensive rebounds.

 

The Fighting Tigers shot 49.1 percent from the field for the game, including 8-17 from behind the arc but finished just 3-6 from the foul line.

 

Jayson McCaster (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led the Fighting Tigers with 22 points. Brendan Doherty (Binghamton, N.Y.) added 18 points and Clint Foster (Candor, N.Y.) finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for Cobleskill.

 

The Express return to the floor in their final home regular season game tomorrow afternoon when they take on the SUNY IT Wildcats at 2 p.m. in Aurora.
