Men's Basketball Falls Against Morrisville

Hot-shooting Morrisville State College made 72 percent of its field-goal attempts in the second half and pulled away for an 84-70 win over the Wells College men's basketball team in North Eastern Athletic Conference action on Sunday, Feb. 5 at the Schwartz Athletic Center.

Morrisville moved one-half game ahead of Wells in the NEAC North Division standings. Morrisville had a 10-3 NEAC record and is 13-6 overall. Wells stands at 10-4 in the conference and is 13-8 on the year. The teams split the two regular-season meetings, as Wells won 72-71 at Morrisville on Jan. 7.

Wells held a 10-point lead early in the first half, but Morrisville answered that early surge and the Mustangs led 31-30 at halftime. The Mustangs made 18-of-25 field-goal attempts in the second half. Wells hung in the game and trailed by six points after a Vaughndell Brantley 3-pointer with five minutes left made the score 64-58, but Morrisville scored the next eight points and sealed the victory at the foul line.

Chris Courtney led Wells with 17 points. Rich Ross scored 16, Anthony Nesci had 14, and Brantley added 10. Wells made 13 3-pointers in the game and shot 11-for-14 at the free-throw line. Ross and Nesci each had six assists.

Wells continues conference play Saturday, Feb. 11 at Gallaudet University and then takes on Wilson College on Sunday, Feb. 12. Both games begin at 2 p.m.
