Men’s Basketball Team’s Rally Falls Short in NYU Tournament

The Wells College men's basketball team faced Fairleigh Dickinson University-Fordham in the consolation game of the 2019 New York University Tip-Off Tournament. After trailing by double-digits with less than 10 minutes to go in the second half, Wells rallied back to take a two-point lead with four minutes remaining. The Express couldn't hold on before falling to FDU by an 84-80 final at Hunter College on Sunday, Nov. 24.

Wells had the upper-hand during most of the first half, especially after an Andrew Richards three put the Express up by eight with about four minutes to go in the opening 20 minutes. The Devils scored 12 of the final 16 of the first to get even with Wells at 35 apiece at the break.

FDU continued its momentum into the second with both teams exchanging leads. The Express were ahead 48-47 seven minutes into the second before the Devils built an 11-point lead midway through the latter half. Wells then rallied to tie the game at 61 with six minutes to go. Two minutes later, the Express reclaimed the lead at 68-66 after a Jalen Tribble layup. The Devils took back the lead for good however, with Wells getting within one-score twice in the final minute.

Tribble set season highs in both points and rebounds in recording his second double-double of the season. The junior finished with 28 points and 19 boards. Tribble ended up with half of the team's 38 rebounds.

Ty McBride was the team's only other double-digit scorer with 16 and co-led the team in assists at five with Zach D'Arpino. Keian Montero led the team in steals with three while adding five rebounds.

The Express shot 50 percent from the floor and nearly 55 percent from beyond the arc in registering 36 points from three-land. Quentin Battle went 3-for-3 in three shooting to account for a quarter of the team's three-pointers.

The men's basketball team next hosts Ithaca College on Sunday, Dec. 1 with a 1 p.m. tip-off.
