Season-Opening Win For Wells Men's Lacrosse

The Wells College men's lacrosse team started its 2018 season with a 14-11 victory over Alfred State at the Wells Turf Field on Wednesday, Feb. 28. The Express scored the first four goals of the game and never trailed.

Aaron Heisey started the scoring for the Express after 2:13 elapsed in the opening quarter. It was the start of four-straight Wells goals. Brian Buttner, Tanner Mingen, and Carson Combs also scored in the fast start for the Express. Alfred State rallied to score three in a row and the Wells lead was 4-3 after the first quarter.

Wells scored all three goals in the second quarter to establish a 7-3 halftime lead. Heisey scored once and Mingen added two in the second quarter.

The surge continued for Wells at the start of the second half. Five goals in a row to start the third quarter grew the lead to 12-3. Heisey scored twice in the run, Buttner added another, Brady Hoose picked up his first of the year, and Trevor Stein scored a man-up goal to finish the run and record his first-career collegiate goal.

Wells goalie Zach Simone made 17 saves to earn the victory. Tanner Mingen had nine ground balls and five caused turnovers to go with three goals and an assist.

Heisey led Wells in scoring with four goals and an assist. Brian Buttner and Carson Combs each scored twice.

Wells now leads the all-time series between the teams 3-1.

Wells is 1-0 on the season and Alfred State is 0-2. The Express is back in action Saturday, March 3 at Western Connecticut State at 11 a.m.
