MEN'S SOCCER HOLDS ON FOR 2-1 VICTORY OVER SUNYIT

Aurora, NY – Justin Rigney (New York) and John Iapoce(Boiceville) each scored in the first half as the Wells College men's soccer team held on to defeat the SUNY IT Wildcats 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Wells. Nico Facey(New York) scored the only goal for the Wildcats while Kurt Makowski (Grand Island) finished with four saves in the loss. The Express have now won four of their last six games, improving to 4-7 with the victory, while the Wildcats fall to 7-4.

Despite holding an 18-10 advantage in shots, the Wildcats battled a stubborn Express defense that allowed few open shots from the Wildcat forwards.

Rigney would put the Express ahead at 35:08 of the first half as Sene fed a beautiful pass to a streaking Rigney that blasted a shot over the head of Makowski for a 1-0 lead. Less than 10-minutes late Iapoce would boot a deflected ball high into the net giving the Express a 2-0 lead headed into halftime.

SUNY IT would not go quietly in the second half as they pressured the Express from the kick off, rallying off 12 shots in the half, but again the defense would step-up blocking or deflecting the majority of shots that would lead to just three of their shots reaching goalie Mike Birklin, who finished with four saves.

The victory marks the first time in program history that Wells has defeated the Wildcats.

The Express will next host St. John Fisher at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, October 6th at Wells.
