CHARGERS HOLD ON FOR SLIM 2-1 VICTORY OVER EXPRESS

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Lancaster Bible College Charges scored two first half goals and held on to defeat the Wells College Express 2-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, Pa. William Schanbacher (Lockwood, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for Wells, while Lawrence Lartey (Waterboro, Maine) and Sean Westerlund (Ellicott City, Md.) each tallied a goal for the Chargers. With the loss the Express drop to 6-5 (3-2 NEAC), while Lancaster improves to 3-6-1 (3-1-1 NEAC).

Schanbacher put the Express ahead in the 8th minute of play, heading a cross from Delroy Roberts (Kingston, Jamaica) into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Chargers responded seven minutes later as Lartey fired a shot past Express keeper C. J. Bayly, tying the game at one. Westerlund scored the go ahead goal and eventual game winner in the 33rd minute. Collecting the ball at the top of the box after scrum in front of the net, Westerlund spun around and sent a shot to the right of the goal for a 2-1 lead.

The two teams played to a scoreless second half. Lancaster tallied six shots to the Express five in the half, while holding a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. The Express did have an opportunity to tie the game in the 62nd minute but, a Roberts shot would ring off the cross bar as the score remained 2-1.

Overall, Lancaster held a slight advantage in shots on goal (8-6) and corner kicks (5-2). Jarrod Bergey (Sellersville, Pa.) earned the victor in net with five saves, while CJ Bayly (Waymart, Pa.) finished with six saves in the loss.

The Express return to action next Saturday when they take on NEAC rival SUNY IT at 1:00 pm in Aurora.
