Adams, Cherry Boost Men’s Soccer To 2-0 NEAC Victory

READING, Pa. – Two early goals by the Wells College men's soccer team were enough to defeat the host Nittany Lions of Penn St.-Berks by a 2-0 margin Sunday afternoon. With the victory, Wells improves to 8-4-3 overall on the year and to 3-1-3 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The Nittany Lions falls to 3-14 overall on the season and to 1-7 in league play.

With the league's top four teams qualifying for the postseason following the elimination of the men's soccer program at Gallaudet University, Wells (3-1-3 NEAC) and Cazenovia College (4-3 NEAC) enter this Saturday's game in Aurora tied with 12 points – the winner of the head-to-head match-up will qualify for the league's postseason.

In the game's ninth minute, freshman J. Tyler Adams (Eastampton, N.J.) scored his fourth goal of the season to elevate Wells to a 1-0 lead in the early goings. Following a rebound issued by Nittany Lions goalkeeper Darrell Geisinger, a crashing Adams fired a shot that placed the visitors on the board and in the lead for good. Sophomore Max Cherry (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored only 3:20 later, collecting his own rebound and depositing it into the back of the net to boost Wells to a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish.

Wells held the decisive 18-to-6 advantage in shots and also drew nine corner kicks in the game. Cherry led all Wells players with five total shots while Adams and classmate Marshall Kaplan (Trumbull, Conn.) each had three.

Express goalkeeper C.J. Bayly (Waymart, Pa.) posted his 16th career shutout of his career, turning aside all four shots on net that he faced. After allowing five goals against Hilbert on Sept. 25, Bayly has allowed only two goals in his previous 507:02. Geisinger drew the loss, making eight total saves while allowing the two Wells goals in the game's first 12 minutes.
The Express return to action this Saturday, Oct. 26 as they host Cazenovia in a noontime game at the South Athletic Field. A victory by either team officially clinches a playoff position in the upcoming NEAC playoffs.
