Men's Soccer Blanks SUNYIT, 3-0

MARCY, N.Y. – For only the second time in program history, the Wells College men's soccer team posted a shutout against the Wildcats from the SUNY Institute of Technology. The Express picked up a 3-0 victory on Saturday to improve to 6-3-1 and to 2-1 within North Eastern Athletic Conference play. The loss drops SUNYIT to 4-4-2 and to 3-1-1 in league play.

Junior Max Cherry (Ridgewood, N.J.) started the scoring only 9:35 into the contest, converting his second goal of the season after receiving a pass from junior Wyatt Buerkle (Cincinnatus, N.Y.). The Express would not score again until freshman Carlos Valdivieso (Atlanta, Ga.) scored off a pass from senior Alexander Essandoh (Accra, Ghana, Africa) to increase the lead to 2-0.

Despite the Wildcats holding an impressive 25-to-8 advantage in shots, sophomore Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.) added an insurance tally with his team-best sixth goal of the season in the 86th minute. SUNYIT also earned eight corner kicks as opposed to only one for the Express.

Wells goalkeeper Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.) registered a career-high 14 saves against the Wildcats, the most by any Wells backstop in four seasons. SUNYIT backstop Jesse Yanarella allowed three goals on seven shots faced to draw the loss.

The Express return to action Saturday, Oct. 4 as they face-off against SUNY Cobleskill in a 3 p.m. road contest.
