Men’s Soccer Stunned By Lancaster Bible, 5-1

AURORA, N.Y. – Despite a goal from junior Alex van Hoekelen (Drums, Pa.), the Wells College men's soccer team posted a 5-1 loss to Lancaster Bible College on Friday at the South Athletic Field. The Express (10-5-1, 6-3 NEAC) allowed five goals on their home field for the first time dating back to Sept. 1, 2009 while the Chargers (10-5-1, 6-2-1 NEAC) secure their sixth league victory of the year.

Wells appeared to have a great chance to open the scoring first in the contest, but a shot from an Express player struck the right post and caromed back to the Lancaster Bible defense. Ivan Correa scored the first two goals for the Chargers, striking at 17:54 and 24:21 to stun the Express early in the contest. Correa's first goal was scored off a right to left cross from Edward Bills while the second goal snuck just inside the left post.

Just over two minutes following Correa's second goal, Zac Bonomo scored his first goal of the season after a Wells player registered a team save. The rebound spilled onto the foot of Bonomo and Express backstop Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.) had no chance to stop the goal.

van Hoekelen scored only 7:15 into the second half, cutting into the Lancaster Bible lead off a feed from senior Charles Naula (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.). David Rizo countered the van Hoekelen goal with a long-range blast that found the back of the net, increasing the visitors lead to 4-1. A penalty kick by Bills increased the visitors lead even further at 82:06.

Wells was outshot by a 25-to-14 margin despite having seven corner kicks to Lancaster Bible's three.

Sciotti was saddled with the loss, allowing five goals on 13 total shots faced. Andrew Kofstad picked up his eighth win of the year, allowing only one goal on five total shots on net.

The Express will honor their six graduating senior student-athletes, including Naula, William Schanbacher (Spencer, N.Y.), Cody Primmer (Oneonta, N.Y.), Trevor Fahey (West Deptford, N.J.), Levi Christman (Sharon Springs, N.Y.), and Alexander Essandoh (Accra, Ghana, Africa) in a ceremony prior to their Saturday, Oct. 25 home contest against Penn St.-Berks. The match will kick off at 3 p.m.
