Cherry's Strikes Lead Men’s Soccer Past D’Youville

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – Powered by two goals from senior Max Cherry (Ridgewood, N.J.), the Wells College men's soccer team posted a 3-0 victory over the Spartans of D'Youville College on Friday at the Jephson Community Athletic Complex. With the win in the opening contest of the Keuka Lakefront Classic, Wells evens its overall record at 1-1 while the Spartans lose their first game of the year.

Playing in the first-ever contest held on Keuka College's brand-new turf playing surface, Cherry netted the first goal in the field's young history in the 32nd minute of action. Forcing home a feed from junior Jesse Constantino (Cincinnatus, N.Y.), Cherry's first goal of the year placed Wells ahead 1-0. Cherry later added the game's third goal, potting a corner kick from sophomore Jim Duchesneau (South Glastonbury, Conn.) at 57:44.

Cherry has now scored four goals in his last two contests playing at Keuka. On Oct. 9, 2013, Cherry also scored the game-winning goal in his team's decisive 4-0 shutout of the Wolfpack – he later added another tally in the waning minutes of the contest.

In between Cherry's two strikes, freshman Christian Garavito (Miami, Fla.) scored his first collegiate goal at 52:06. Picking off an errant clearing attempt by D'Youville, Garavito hammered the ball past the lunging Spartans goalkeeper for an unassisted goal. Cumulatively, Wells outshot D'Youville by a 16-to-4 margin, forcing their opponents into granting the Express six corner kicks.

Wells goalkeeper Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.) recorded his first career shutout, posting two saves against D'Youville. Brett Matthews drew the loss for the Spartans, allowing three goals on seven shots.

The Express return to action Saturday, Sept. 5 as they face-off against Pitt.-Bradford at 3 p.m. on the campus of Keuka College.
