Sowersby Lifts Men's Soccer In Double Overtime Victory

ABINGTON, Pa. – Junior Hunter Sowersby (Sidney, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in double overtime with only 75 seconds remaining on the clock to lift the Wells College men's soccer team to a 2-1 win against Penn St.-Abington on Sunday. With the victory, Wells (11-6, 8-3 NEAC) posted its team-record eighth North Eastern Athletic Conference win while the Nittany Lions (6-7-2, 4-5-2 NEAC) drew its fifth league loss of the year.

Sowersby's second goal of the season at 108:45 lifted the Express to the 2-1 victory as he forced home a cross from senior Max Cherry (Ridgewood, N.J.) to end the game in the second overtime period. Wells now boasts a 3-0 overtime record in 2015 and remains undefeated in its last 11 overtime contests dating back to the 2012 season.

Freshman Jack Pilgrim (North Kingstown, R.I.) scored his 10th goal of the season off an assist from junior Jesse Constantino (Cincinnatus, N.Y.) only 7:23 into regulation. He becomes the first player in team history to reach double-digit goals in a single season while also tying the all-time mark for single season point scoring with 23 points on offense (10-3=23).

Richard Domico curled home the equalizer for Penn St.-Abington at 13:30, scoring from the top of the box against Express goalkeeper Owen May (Warsaw, N.Y.) to end his scoreless streak at 226:50 dating back to Saturday, Oct. 17 against SUNY Poly.

May turned away five saves for Wells, moving to 10-3 overall on the year, while Jose Arroyo allowed two goals on only three saves for the Nittany Lions. Penn St.-Abington outshot the Express by a 11-to-7 margin but Wells held the 6-to-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Express return to action Saturday, Oct. 31 as they host the Wildcats from Cazenovia College at high noon on Senior Day. Wells will recognize Cherry, Alex van Hoekelen (Hazleton, Pa.), Tyler Morris (Maryland, N.Y.), Wyatt Buerkle (McGraw, N.Y.), Ryan Mitzel (Voorhees, N.J.), Justin Zywot (Niskayuna, N.Y.) and William Schanbacher (Spencer, N.Y.). Michael Sciotti (North Syracuse, N.Y.) will also be recognized as he is graduating early.
