Men's Soccer Shines In 3-0 Win Over Morrisville

The Wells College men's soccer team defeated visiting Morrisville State College 3-0 on Saturday, Sept. 30 at the Wells Turf Field. Morrisville has won the last three North Eastern Athletic Conference championships, and it was just the third NEAC loss for the Mustangs since the start of the 2015 season. Two of those three defeats have come against Wells.

Wells scored all three goals in the second half and Owen May and the Wells defense recorded its first shutout since the first game of the season. For May, it was the 25th goalkeeping win of his career and he now holds the Wells record, one ahead of C.J. Bayly, for career goalkeeping wins. It was the second shutout of the year and 14th of the career for May. He made four saves in the match.

The Express broke a scoreless tie in the opening minutes of the second half. Junger Vargas passed a square ball from the left wing to an un-marked Ryan Lanning at the top of the penalty area. Lanning shot into the upper right corner of the net for his first goal of the season and the first of his collegiate career.

Wells doubled its lead in the 55th minute. Kevin Schrank lofted a pass from the midfield to beat an offside trap and Vargas ran on to it. He was in alone on the goalkeeper and scored. The lead grew to three in the 72nd minute with another goal from Vargas. He took a pass from Tom Schuette on the left side and scored from near the penalty spot. Vargas leads Wells with six goals on the season. It was the first point of the year for Schuette.

It was the first time this season that Wells has scored three goals in a game.

Wells continues NEAC play next weekend with a Saturday, Oct. 7 home game against Lancaster Bible College and a Sunday, Oct. 8 home game against Penn State Abington.
